In this Chemthink tutorial, you will explore ionic bonding and take a short quiz. Topics include:
This new HTML5 version was built from the ground up to run on iPads, mobile phones, Chromebooks, and real computers in any HTML5-capable browser. Please let us know if you have any issues. Thank you so much to Mr. Charles Sprandal for creating the original version of this wonderful tutorial!

There is a typo on tutorial slide 24.

Lee,
Thanks for pointing this out! I’m working on the new version of Ionic Bonding, and will make sure “here” is spelled correctly.

so glad to find these again….any chance it’ll ever have a student data base again, I use to assign these to my students?
Absolutely!
I’m working on porting this one over, and hopefully will release it by the middle of next week.
Done! The new version is complete, and is now connected to the database.
Enjoy!

When will you make the quiz active again?

In order to do the question sets in the HTML5 version, you must first log in and complete the tutorial.

Dear Chris
Is the Ionic Bonding tutorial and problem set up? I am able to open the Covalent Bonding and Ionic Formula tutorials and problem sets but not the Ionic Bonding. I am hoping to use all 3 with my classes next week, though I can get a version of it on pbs learning media. But they don’t have Ionic Formulas, which is a great one. Is there a chance it will be up by Tuesday or should I just plan on sticking with pbs for now?

Elise,
Ionic Bonding is up and running on the new server in HTML5. In order to access it, just tap the picture. It should run great on any device (phone, iPad, Chromebook, computer), and I have added some new 3D visuals to spice things up. In order to use the new version, students will need to create accounts and log in.
Covalent Bonding and Ionic Formulas only exist in the old Flash formats, which do not require a login.

Dear Chris,
Thanks for your prompt response over the holiday weekend. When I click on the Ionic Bonding picture it only takes me to the ChemThink Login page. I have created an account and a class too but after I login, I cannot get back to the sims page. When I go to simbucket.com and click on the Ionic Bonding picture, it gives me a discription etc… and I see the salt crystal picture but clicking on it only takes me once again to the login page. I have tried on both my pc and my iPad with same result. I am hoping to use this for class on Tuesday when my daughter is having a baby and my sub needs a great lesson to start off the new year. Thanks for your help.

No worries! Everything that you have described is working as intended.
By popular demand, students must actually create an account and login to use the new tutorials and question sets. This way, teachers can track how many attempts students have made, just like with the old system.
Here is what you need to do to get your classes up and running:
1. Create a teacher account. With your teacher account, set up your classes. With your teacher account you can’t actually run the tutorials or question sets. For that you will need to…
2. …create a mock student account. Join one of your classes that you have created under your teacher account. Try the tutorials and the question sets!
Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you so much. It works perfectly now. I love the new graphics. Hope your new year is great.

Hi, I tried to do the above and it wouldn’t let me create a student account… Help! I would love to preview the tutorials…
4 years ago ·
Were you able to log out of your teacher account, then find the “Create an Account” button on the login screen? From there you should be able to create a new student account.

Thank you for changing this tutorial up a bit. There is a typo on slide 24/27 Fluoride is spelled the way most of my students think it should be spelled.
AnnMarie,
Thank you for pointing that out! I just updated slides 24/27 and 25/27. I’m going to hold off on pushing out the update until the next version of ChemThink, which should be available within the next two weeks and include both “Covalent Bonding” and “Molecular Shapes” (VSEPR and Lewis Dot notation).
I’m getting close! 🙂

It’s a great tutorial but for some reason many of the graphics are not showing up. For instance, I cannot see the crystal structure forming. Only the text appears. Is there a special program that needs to be installed for these graphics? All the other portions of the interactive work and we were able to see them in the Covalent Bonding activity but not the Ionic Bonding activity.
Thanks for the great interactives

Drat! Which browser are you using? This problem shouldn’t occur, and I fixed something similar in a different simulation over the summer.
I am having the same problem as Stacey on chrome and my students all have chromebooks!
I have been trying to replicate the problem, but have been unable to replicate it on Chrome on a PC, mac, and iPad. Would you mind sending me an email with a screenshot?
My students can’t get past the login screen!
Kimette,
Thanks for the letting me know. Could you email me a screenshot? A cell-phone picture works too.
Otherwise it is extremely difficult for me to reproduce the bug and troubleshoot.
Thank you!

The “login” buttons are grayed out.
I don’t know how to attach a picture.

Same thing here. Once I click the play button on the tutorial, nothing shows up. I’d be more than willing to send a print-screen if necessary.
Please do. I just made some significant changes to the server. If you see a problem, please send a screenshot showing the browser and the time, and I will do my best to investigate.

great learning experience for me and my child! I love to teach my son, Rudy, chemistry at the dinner table. He loves it! 😉

Hi, trying to check these simulations out but I can’t get them to play. When i click on the tutorial, it send me to the login page. I made an account, assigned some classes, but I’m not having any luck playing the tutorial so I can evaluate it for my students. I heard about this site from the AP Chem FB group, so I really want to see if it will work for my kids. I’m sure I’m just missing something but I’m going in circles here. TIA, Nicolle Arteaga

Nicolle,
Sorry for the confusion!
Teacher accounts exist only to manage classes. To try out the tutorial, log out of your teacher account and use the guest login feature. This will get you directly into the tutorials and question sets. If you don’t want to worry about usernames and passwords, and if you aren’t worried about having ChemThink track progress, you can have your students use the guest login as well.
For my own students I don’t even create a teacher account anymore. I just have my students use the guest login feature, then show me the completed question set (or take a selfie!).

I love these tutorials but some of my students are having a hard time with Ionic Bonding. They get to Slide 18 (they are all doing this from home and I am unable to help them) and it won’t let them get past this. A small white box comes up in the upper left corner and then nothing. Any help would be wonderful! by the way, I did have one student try 3 different platforms (chrome, exploder, firefox) and 2 different computers. I am not having this issue but multiple students are. Thank you for your help!
It is happening with Ionic Bonding (slide 18) as well as Ionic Formulas (slide 23).
OH and now I am having the issue too. 2 computers and a tablet.
Ok, I figured out the slide 23 issue 🙂 you have it so it has to have the sign before the number and I teach it to where the sign has to be after the number. Problem solved for that one. But the Ionic Bonding is still glitching. I tried to put a screenshot of the glitch (by the way, I am able to go backwards, just not forward and the white box shows up when it stops working going forward) but I am unsure how to post it here.
Sorry for all the posts – this online teaching is difficult at the last minute with all the changes to teaching because of the in place order.

same issue- slide 18– can’t go past it 🙁

My students are getting stuck on slide 18 for the ionic bonding. Is there something I can do to help them?

Found the bug!
I’m working on the fix now. It should be out shortly.

Hi Suzanne,
Can you describe what you see when you click on the simulation?
