We are bringing Chemthink back!
Chemthink has been an outstanding chemistry resource for many years. Its Flash-based tutorials and quizzes were a great way for students to learn chemistry concepts. Unfortunately, over the years support for its platform has declined, and Chemthink finally stopped working this past summer. We are excited to announce that we are bringing www.chemthink.com back to life!
Five of the original Flash-based tutorials are now operational on Simbucket. We are looking to get another five tutorials up and running on simbucket as soon as we can. Over the next several months we will work on converting the tutorials and quizzes to HTML5. Once this is done, we will work on rebuilding the server so that teachers and students can create accounts, students will be able to log in, and teachers will be able to keep track of their students’ progress on the tutorials and quizzes. It is a huge endeavor, but we are hoping to have all of the tutorials and quizzes fully operational by the end of this summer (2016) in time for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

I was so excited to see the ionic bonding tutorial up and running! It is such a great resource! Hope that you are able to complete the ionic formulas tutorial soon!

I will try to get everything up as soon as I can. Part of the lead time is that I am recreating them from scratch in HTML5 so that they work on phones and iPads. I will post each tutorial here individually as soon as I finish it, so things should be coming available gradually over the next few weeks and months.

Thank you thank you thank you for bringing this back. I’ve been using Chemthink in my chemistry classroom for over ten years, and it was sorely missed this year when it went down. It’s an invaluable teaching tool. I’m very pleased to see that it’s being resurrected.

You are very welcome! I was in the same boat, except that I’m only teaching chemistry for half of the year. Now I wish I would have gotten on this sooner. 🙂

Add my name to the list of chemistry teachers grateful that this resource is back! I can only imagine the effort required to do what you’re doing, and I certainly appreciate it. Every single week since ChemThink went down, I’ve checked on the link in hopes it would be resurrected but I finally gave up. When I was bemoaning the loss to my students (because we just started on chemical bonding and Lewis structures), one of the kids did a quick search and said, ‘It’s back!’ I was so happy to hear that, even though the quiz aspect isn’t fully functional yet.

All of the problem sets are now available. 🙂
I just used the “Atomic Structure” problem set today in class, and kept track of who had completed what by checking their computer screens when they finished.

You are welcome. All of the tutorials and problem sets I have access to are now running in their original Flash form. Recreating everything in HTML5 is proving to be more challenging than I had anticipated, but comment like yours help keep me motivated to push forward with the conversion process. Thank you so much. You are a lifesaver. I have ran a few of the simulations off the PBS site, but their selection was very limited. Even going through them together in class (since they cannot use their iPads) has been helpful to my students this year. I have used ChemThink every year since I was a student teacher

SO happy to see an update on chemthink.com that led me to even more resources for science teaching!!! THANK YOU!!! Our chemistry team (7 teachers) were SO devastated in the fall when chemthink was down. We were able to pull a few of the simulations from the PBS site, and made due with other sites/simulations, but will be GREAT once this site is fully functional again. Forever grateful for your endeavor at getting this back up & running.

You are very welcome! Its nice to hear that people are using it and love it. It is taking longer than I originally anticipated to rewrite each one for HTML5, so your encouragement definitely helps me stay motivated!
On that note, I am putting the finishing touches on the HTML5 version “Atomic Structure”, my first complete rewrite. It should work perfectly on mobile devices, chromebooks, and computers!
